Flight grounded by a storm: an unplanned Amsterdam evening and a body to body booking
Each autumn and winter a few named storms cross the Netherlands, and on the worst of those days flights at Schiphol are cancelled in large numbers while the trains thin out or stop. Travellers who expected to sleep at home find themselves with one more night in a hotel they never chose. A body to body booking is one way of turning that unplanned evening into something other than waiting.
Where you end up decides how it is arranged
Stranded travellers land in one of two places. Some are rebooked into a hotel at or near the airport, often late in the evening and with a voucher from the airline. Others head into the city, either because they were already staying there or because the airport hotels filled first.
A room in central Amsterdam is arranged the ordinary way: forty to sixty minutes from the confirmed hour to the knock, the figures from the profile of whoever you choose, and the usual rule on half the fee, which goes ahead on a first booking and on the other cases the deposit note lists.
A room at Schiphol or an airport hotel sits outside that window. It is arranged on its own, with the length of the drive agreed in writing before an hour is held, and half the fee goes ahead on every airport booking however often you have booked before. The glossary entry on Schiphol by arrangement sets out the terms in full.
Writing the message on a disrupted day
Storm days are chaotic, and the first message gains from being plain. Where you are now, and where you will sleep if that differs. The hotel and room number once you have them. Whether your rebooked flight leaves early, because an eight hour block or a late three hour session makes no sense before a dawn check-in. How long you would like, and the name of a therapist if one caught your eye on the roster.
If the airline has not yet said where you are staying, wait until it has. A booking made against an address you may not keep only adds to the muddle of the day.
Body to body after a day in the terminal
A day of queues, hard seats and long walks between gates leaves a particular stiffness behind, and a hotel room that was never part of the plan rarely feels welcoming. Body to body suits that state because it asks nothing of the room beyond warmth and a bed with space along one side, and it leaves nothing to clear up. An hour is a full session; ninety minutes give more room if the day has been long.
Keep the rest of the evening simple. Check the time of the rebooked flight twice, set an alarm before she arrives, and leave the bag packed by the door.
If the storm is still blowing
Storm wind is loud in old buildings and in high hotel rooms alike, and a session with the curtains drawn and the window shut is calmer than you might expect. Inside the city the window holds in a gale as it holds in rain. The autumn storm page has more on evenings when the wind comes off the IJ.
