Soapy or body to body in Amsterdam summer heat, in a room that holds the warmth of the day
For much of the year this site argues for body to body because it makes its own warmth. On the handful of hot summer nights Amsterdam gets, that same quality becomes the question. Soapy, which runs on foam and warm water, is the one format here that leaves you cooler than it found you, and it deserves a fair comparison.
What a hot night does to an Amsterdam room
Brick canal houses and older hotels are built to keep heat in, and after a few warm days they hold on to it stubbornly. Top floors under old roofs suffer first, and many rooms have no air conditioning at all. A room that reached the high twenties in the afternoon may still be there at midnight.
Opening a window helps less than visitors expect. On a still night the air outside is barely cooler than the air inside, and in the centre it brings the street in with it: bicycles, voices on the bridges, the late tram. Closing the curtains against the afternoon sun does more than any window opened after dark.
In that setting, the warmth body to body creates is not always welcome.
The case for soapy on a hot night
Soapy starts under the shower, with foam spread across the skin by her hands and her body and warm water keeping the temperature level. Water carries heat away, so the session cools you as it goes. Partway through there is usually a move to the bed for slower work with a little oil, by which point you are already cooler than when you began.
It needs a decent bathroom. A large, well lit one with a reliable shower suits it; a cramped one with a feeble shower makes soapy awkward in any weather.
The case for body to body even in heat
Body to body still works on a warm night, with adjustments. Lighter oil, used sparingly. A window opened an hour before, curtains closed through the afternoon, a fan running if the room has one. A later start, around ten, once the street has cooled. In a room that is warm but not stifling, oil work is comfortable and needs no bathroom at all. Lighter oil also leaves less on the skin, which counts when the sheets are already warm, and a quick cool shower afterwards finishes the job.
How to choose
Room very hot and bathroom good: soapy. Room warm and bathroom poor: body to body with lighter oil, booked late. Room cooled by air conditioning: body to body, as on any other night. In every case, describe the room and the bathroom in the first message and the suggestion that comes back will follow from it. The heatwave page, the soapy page and the body to body page give the detail.
Whichever you pick, the arrival window does not change with the heat: forty to sixty minutes from the confirmed hour to any central address.
