A wet November weekend in Amsterdam, with a body to body evening to anchor it
November is one of the wet months in Amsterdam: short grey days, frequent rain and darkness by five. It is also a favourite time for a weekend break, with the summer crowds gone and the museums open late. A body to body evening gives a wet weekend a fixed point, and planning it well comes down mainly to choosing the right night.
The shape of a November weekend
Friday evening is usually arrival, tired from a flight or a train, in the dark. Saturday is the full day: museums, markets, a long lunch, a walk if the rain allows. Sunday is shorter, with checkout, a last coffee and the journey home. Rain can arrive at any point, and in November it generally does.
The light is the other thing to plan around. By the middle of the month it is fully dark before five, so an evening indoors starts earlier than the clock suggests, and Saturday can feel long even when it is full.
Which night for body to body
Friday suits a guest who arrives worn out and wants to start the weekend warm. The catch is timing: flights and trains run late, and a booking set against an uncertain arrival is hard to place. If you pick Friday, give yourself a margin and book for later in the evening.
Saturday is the natural choice. After a full day out in the wet, a booking at eight or nine fills the evening without cutting into anything else. Saturday evenings in the dark months are also the ones that go first, so write in the afternoon, or the day before.
Sunday works if you leave on Monday. A Sunday evening is quieter, and a longer session fits into it easily.
Planning ahead from home
Anything arranged more than a day ahead sends half the fee before she sets out, which is the usual rule for a weekend planned in advance, and a first booking does the same whatever the notice. Should the plan shift, a single change of date is free with more than a day's notice, provided the new evening is within two weeks. The deposit note has the detail.
Preparing the room on a wet weekend
A weekend hotel room in November is often a small one in an old building. Learn its heating on Friday, so that on Saturday you know how long it takes to warm. Hang wet coats in the bathroom, not on the chair by the bed. The guide to arriving wet says more about the first moments of a rainy booking.
The length that suits a dark weekend
Ninety minutes fits a typical November evening, because the first stretch goes to warmth. Two hours suit a Saturday with nothing planned afterwards. For the whole night, the eight hour block belongs to exactly these long dark weekends. The autumn page covers the season around it.
